A Military General Service Medal and Waterloo Medal Pair, awarded to CORP. JOHN RUSHTON, 23rd REG. LIGHT DRAGOONS, the first with clasp TALAVERA. Footnote:- John Rushton, a labourer from Elston, Notts., was born circa 1792. He enlisted in 23rd Light Dragoons 12th Sept. 1808 and, in 1809, fought at the Battle of Talavera, where he was wounded, together with another 3,717 of his comrades. He was promoted to Corporal 25th April 1815 within Troop No.2 (of 6) He fought at Waterloo 18th June 1815 and is on the Waterloo Medal Roll. The regiment was disbanded on 24th November 1817 and he was ''discharged, not recommended''. He is noted on the Chelsea Pension Records and Regimental Record of Chelsea Pensioners as being admitted 6th Dec.1853 aged 61 years, with Notes:- discharged 24th Nov.1817, wounded at Talavera, died 11th Feb. 1866. Regimental Number G11029/47 This link graphically captures what Cpl. Rushton endured at Talavera as part of the Light Cavalry which were the sharp end of the British attack on the French Infantry.
