Estimated at £600 - £900

First example: Moderate time staining to sheet which is significantly more pronounced towards outer edges against slip. Associated tempering of colour overall with some possible additional light fading, but painted in the artist's characteristically muted palette. No evidence of cockling. Not examined out of the frame.

Second example: Relatively light to moderate time staining across sheet which is slightly more pronounced in some areas of the sky particularly those which are less worked. Associated tempering to overall colour depth but the blue, for example used to highlight windows in particular, retains a good degree of freshness. That in the sky possibly more on the grey side. No evidence of cockling. Not examined out of the frame.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. Auction: British, European & Sporting Art, 11th Nov, 2023

On the Kentish Downs by Algernon Cecil Newton is one of the highlights of the British, European and Sporting Art Sale on 11th November. On offer with an estimate of £8,000-12,000 (plus buyer’s premium), the picture is a fine example of Newton’s quiet yet poetic landscapes.

The sale will also include a Private Collection of works by Myles Birkett Foster and George Weatherill, and the last remaining paintings from the T.B. & R. Jordan Collection of Staithes Artists.

Sunday 5 November - Friday 10 November 11am-4pm, and morning of sale from 8am.
