Farmyard scene
Oil on canvas, 49cm by 72cm
Unlined, all keys present, slightly lacking in tension. Old paper label on back of canvas, and painted 'HOLT'. Slight bulge to canvas in bottom right corner. Brittle age craquelure throught, mostly flat but slightly raised and pulling at canvas in thicker passages of paint in the sky but all appears stable. Scattered minor retouchings throughout to small losses and suppressing abrasion. Larger passages of overpaint to the face, neck and forelegs of grey horse, to the pigs, to the tail and hindlegs of the black horse, and a swathe of grey overpaint to the front of the building. There has been a fair amount of abrasion to the delicate blacks and browns and thin paint layers, suppressed in areas by retouching. The picture has been partially cleaned in the past, and older varnish left on in darker areas. Even upper varnish layer, scattered minor surface scuffs and light suface dirt.
