The artist Phillip Homan Miller was born in Londonderry, studied architecture and painting entering the RA schools where he won a first prize for figurative painting. He exhibited at the RA from 1879.

In good original unlined condition the work has extremely thick impasto in places with surface dirt and discoloured varnish throughout. It is contained within its heavy original Edwardian gilt plaster and wooden frame, large pieces of plaster are missing.
