George Lambert (1700-1765)

Italianate River Landscape (c.1755)

Oil on canvas, 31cm by 38.5cm

Private Collection, UK

Hogarth's close friend George Lambert was a founding member and later chairman of The Society of Artists, estbalished in 1760 - one of Britian's first professional artist associations and an important forerunner of The Royal Academy. Though now lwss known than his younger contemporary Richard Wilson, Lambert too is considered, in Luke Herrmann's words "One of the pioneers of landscape painting in Britian...and one of the first British - born painters of 'natural' landscape". As with Wilson, his work was often influenced by the Classical landscapes of 17th century French artists such as Claude Lorrain or Gaspard Dughet - whether in depictions of Britain or, as here, in a pastoral vision of Italy.

Small and fine amount of retouching and infilling towards the upper left corner.
