A Norwegian Birch Tankard, 18th century, of cylindrical form, the hinged domed cover carved with a lion, on four fluted feet, 21cm high; and A Similar Tankard, the cover carved with a foliate roundel, on three fluted feet, 21cm high (2)
These Norwegian turned birch tankards derive their shape from the silver and pewter peg tankards made in Germany, the Baltic States and Scandinavia. They were used to serve sour cream porridge (rommegrot) and were often given to mothers after childbirth
