Henry Alken Jnr. (19th Century)
The York-London mail coach in a snowstorm
Signed, oil on canvas, 29cm by 59.5cm
Provenance: Frost & Reed Limited
Sold for £750
Estimated at £700 - £1,000
Lined, a little stiff and pressed. All keys present, good tension. Brittle age craquelure throughout, flat and stable but tops of cracks slightly abraded and appearing pale, some slightly retouched. There has been some abrasion to the upper paint layers, particularly to darker passages of sky, to delicate dark colours and thin paint layers, for example the edges of the tress, the blacks and browns of the carriage, the bottom edge, the front horses' forelegs, the blanket over the coachmen's knees, the thinner passages of snow. This has been suppressed in places by retouching, including to sky around figures, grey blanket, and in the foreground snow to the left of the horses. Minor rubbing at edges, a retouched horizontal scratch middle top of sky. Yellow deposit on the surface behind the carriage at the edge of the trees and a smaller dab of the same material to the trees at the left. One small adhered bit of brown paper at the bottom edge. A series of small scrateches to the varnish in the sky. Fairly even matt varnish, minor surface accretions and a little surface dirt.
