Henry Hindley (1701-1771),born near Wigan and moved to work in Petergate, York in 1731. A very fine and talented clockmaker of his time who excelled in making complicated clockwork year duration, complex calendarwork, bracket and turret clocks. In 1750 he made a clock for York Minster.

This example has an interesting movement, as it does not just strike on the hours, it strikes on the half hour too, which is known as "Dutch Striking" (eg 8 o'clock with 8 strokes on the big bell, 8.30 with 8 strokes on the small bell etc). Behind the dial plate and movement front plate are inscribed when the clock was made and who the clock was made for. Thomas Norcliff was from a Catholic family residing at Langton Hall in the East Riding of Yorkshire, where they held the manor. The movement for this clock was illustrated in an article on Hindley for Antiquarian Horology in September 1972, pg 686. Also see Loomes (Brian) Clockmakers of Northern England, pgs 143-146.

Sold for £1,600
Estimated at £2,000 - £3,000
