{} Thomas Francis Dicksee RA (1819-1895)
"Cordelia"
Signed and inscribed on stretcher verso with additional original artist's inscribed label, oil on canvas, 49.5cm by 39cm

Sold for £13,000
Estimated at £7,000 - £10,000

In overall good and original state of preservation. However, the canvas is slightly buckling within the upper right-hand corner and there is a effectively single relatively pronounced diagonal crack no more than 1cm in length (see images). Superficial surface scratch top edge approx 2cm from far left-hand corner and no more than 0.5cm in length. There is an amount of effectively horizontally aligned puckering and gathering of the paint and varnish mostly above her right shoulder and within the background which slightly extends into the outer edge of her hair. The same can be found to a much lesser extent above her left shoulder. Isolated area of cracquelure no more than 1cm overall within the lower reaches of her hair left-hand side (see images). It is possible that the canvas and painting has been exposed to a slightly damp environment as there is evidence of mold/mildew along the lower edge and the off isolated spot elsewhere. The varnish has deteriorated and has taken on a slightly milky quality. For more information please contact the department.
