A Fine and Rare Walnut Eight Day Longcase Clock with Unusual Lunar Display, signed Edward Cockey, Warminster, circa 1735, the well figured case with arched pediment and re-built caddy top with ball finials, pierced sound frets to the sides, the omission of pillars to the hood and canted and fluting to the corners, walnut quarter-veneered arched trunk door with stringing and crossbanded borders, re-built plinth with matching halved veneers, the case sides of the trunk with veneers running from front to back, 12-inch arched brass dial with Roman and Arabic silvered chapter ring signed, dial centre matted and nicely engraved with birds and floral decoration, date aperture and seconds dial, dial engraved around the borders and the arch with lunar dial with phases of the moon aperture, five pillar movement with an anchor escapement and inside countwheel striking on a bell, 251cm high

Edward Cockey (1669-1768) is famed for a series of astronomical clocks supplied to Queen Anne in 1705 and the Lord Weymouth at Longleat. A lacquer longcase clock with a very similar dial to the above signed, in the same way, is in Dunster Castle, with a much more complex astronomical clock in the British Museum, bearing an identical signature. David Pollard, in his book The Astronomical Clockmaker Edward Cockey and other Warminster Horologists, also discusses Cockey in detail.

28.06.11, The caddied top has been made later from the arched top upwards, the caddy can be lifted off to make the clock shorter, the case has good colour and is nicely figured, case with small cracks to the veneers and some veneers are slightly lifting in parts, some edges have small chips, trunk door is slightly bowed, dial with some minor scratches to the chapter ring but mainly clean, movement is complete and in clean condition.
