Old re-line covered in a thick layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. Outer edges of the canvas generally rubbed and worn with some losses, with various relatively minor surface scuffs, scratches and nicks. Mostly contained within peripheral edges, paint is slightly thin in places and flattened from old restoration process. Stretcher shadow, slightly opaque/chalky quality to areas of the surface most notably throughout the lady's hair. Much of the background and lady's hair would have apprear to had a course of restoration with consistent retouching and strengthening in addition to swathes of the lady's drapery including the shadows and definition varying. Face and flesh mostly less affected with fine stable cracquelure throughout. Canvas slightly loose on stretcher.
