"The first prick of the steel"
Signed, inscribed verso, oil on canvas, 34cm by 50.5cm
Sold for £500
Estimated at £200 - £300
Original canvas covered in a fairly thick layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. Relatively pronounced stretcher shadow. Varying sized evident craquelure across surface. Delicate and sporadic retouches to sky, presumably to old flaked paint and a linear retouch to disguise upper horizontal stretcher shadow. A further likely general strengthening to sky and retouching to upper edge and parts of sky which has discoloured and is mostly visible by eye. Some further likley strengthening through the expanse of water. Scattered retouches to lower right hand corner. Further horizontal linear retouch within the vegetation immediately above the fish's head and is approximately 2cm in length. Scattered retouches elsewhere.
Private collection. No further notable provenance known to date.
