Lot 1109

1109

William Geddes (1841-1884) Scottish
The young angler
Signed, oil on canvas, 53.5cm by 34cm

Sold for £420
Estimated at £300 - £500

Original canvas. Slight stretcher shadow especially along upper horizontal. Odd minor rubbing/abrasion/loss to outer edges with fine vertical inprint/transferance of gilt paint mostly to upper left hand side. Areas of small sized craquelure which is more pronounced across the rock left hand side edge above lower left hand side corner. Further less pronounced patches across his trousers, general lapels of jacket, his right hand arm and the water immediately behind and around his outstretched right arm. Other areas of craquelure less visible in general. Patch of retouching towards lower right hand corner, small patch of retouching immediately below his lower lip. The upper outer edges and darker tones of the large rock that the angler rests his right foot upon may have received a small amount of strengthening. Some surface dirt and discoloured varnish that has been brush applied. There is a further opaque coloured vertical splash mark which runs from the underside of his right palm through the expanse of water to the lower edge. Tiny horizontal imperfection or nick to canvas just below his left hand grasping hand and no more than 0.5cm across. Otherwise in a broadly good and stable state of preservation.

We are happy to provide Condition Reports to Prospective Buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a condition report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition.

Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.

Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.
