Lot 1132

1132

Arthur Claude Cooke (1867-1951)
"The Engagement Ring"
Signed and dated 1901, oil on canvas, 90.5cm by 121cm

Exhibited: The Royal Academy, 1901, No. 584

Sold for £5,000
Estimated at £5,500 - £6,500

Original canvas would appear to be sandwiched with a synthetic? reline and outer linen or canvas exterior layer (see image). Likely clean and revarnish. The right hand side of the upper edge is adrift of the synthetic backing and the frame (see images) with visible retouching to disguise. Some surface dirt and discoloured varnish now in evidence. An amount of superficial surface scratches and scuffs within the lower section, mostly around the lower skirts and foreground of the seated woman showing her engagement ring, the table legs and the lower parts of the table cloth. Further superficial vertical scratch to right hand side edge as shown on images. The paint is slightly thin in places, ie the skirts of the seated ladies, exposed table legs, table cloth, parts of the background and foreground, etc. Fairly delicate and sporadic retouching to background throughout the khaki green along the left hand side edge, with further fairly delicate and sporadic retouching throughout the costume of the seated lady displaying her engament ring and to a relatively minor extent in her face, presumably to disguise old flaked paint of craquelure. Other retouches to mostly the lower parts of the seated lady in white are less consistant again. Likely right angled damage with assocated retouching and repair at approximate left hand thigh level of the seated lady in white, and approximately 2-3cm and 1cm on each length (see image). On the Kentish Downs by Algernon Cecil Newton is one of the highlights of the British, European and Sporting Art Sale on 11th November. On offer with an estimate of £8,000-12,000 (plus buyer’s premium), the picture is a fine example of Newton’s quiet yet poetic landscapes.

Further highlights include Eugene Galien-Laloue’s Paris, Winter Fruit Stalls of 1910, and “The Engagement Ring” by Arthur Claude Cooke, which was exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1901. Also of note in the sale is Lady Electra Being Led by a Groom by Lionel Edwards.

The sale will also include a Private Collection of works by Myles Birkett Foster and George Weatherill, and the last remaining paintings from the T.B. & R. Jordan Collection of Staithes Artists.
