A Second World War French Navy Brass Tampion, from the Guépard-class destroyer (contre-torpilleurs) Verdun. The tampion is of circular form, the ropetwist cast border inscribed 'On Ne Passe Pas' and enclosing the bust head of Joan of Arc, later mounted in a bakelite frame, 16.5cm, 21cm including frame. Footnote:- The tampion was brought back from the Second World War by the vendor's relative who served with the Royal Navy Mediterranean Fleet. The Verdun was built for the French Navy during the 1920's. After France surrendered to Germany in June 1940, the Verdun served with the navy of Vichy France. She was among the ships of the French fleet scuttled at Toulon, France, on 27th November 1942. She was refloated 29th September 1943, bombed and sunk 1944, refloated again in 1948 and broken up in Italy.
