A Silver Mounted Ceremonial Baton, with gold thread embroidered eagles on a blue ground, the silver end mounts inscribed TERRA BELLI DECUS PACIS, and with Louis Nikolas d'Avout Nomine Par l'Emporar Napoleon Marachal de Clumpierre le 29 Florbasoau 12e, one silver mount with indistinct early 20th century Birmingham hallmarks

Louis Nikolas d'Avout 1770-1823 was regarded as one of Napoleon's finest commanders, and his great abilities on the battle field and his reputation as a stern disciplinarian earned him the title The Iron Marshal. He became 1st Duc d'Auerstaedt, 1st Prince d'Eckmuhl and was Marshal of France under Napoleon. Despite his noble birth, he was Chef de Bation in the campaign of 1792 and served in the campaigns from 1794-1797. D'Avout, as he was generally known at this time, was one of the generals created a Marshal of France on the accession of Napoleon as Emperor. After the Battle of Auerstaedt it was said At Gena Napoleon won a battle he could not lose at Auerstaedt d'Avour won a battle he could not win". On the first restoration of the Bourbon Dynasty he retired into private life but rejoined Napoleon on the latter's return from Elba before finally in 1822 being elected mayor for Savigny-sur-Orge."
