Edward IV (1461-70), Flemish Imitation1 Gold Ryal (Rose Noble), c.16th century, (36mm, 7.06g), obv. ED WARD DI GRA REX ANGL & FRA DNS IB, the King standing in ship facing out, shield in left hand and sword in right, initial E in banner, rose below, rev. IHC AVT TRANSIENS PER MEDIVM ILLORV IBAT (Luke 4:30, 'But He passing through the midst of them went His way'), York rose in splendour (the special cognizance of the King2) over cross with lis ends, crowned lions passant guardant in angles, beaded and linear tressures and outer beaded circle, mm crown at beginning of legend, (S.1952), wavy flan with scratches to obv. field to left and right of King, the imitation die with weaker engraving leading to a duller strike, thus AVF for issue.

1M. Schulman records the 'Dubbele en enkele Rozenobels op naam van Koning EDUARD van Engeland' among the imitation coins struck by the Gorinchem Mint in South Holland, see 'De muntstempels der Munt te Gorinchem aanwezig in het Museum Oud-Gorcum', NKJ (1917, 4), p.63

To include the Geoff Hann Collection. The Collection covers the coinage produced by the first Greek general-kings who established their own dynasties in Egypt, Syria and the Indian-subcontinent, and the later Provincial coinage of the Roman Empire. Of note is lot 6, a silver stater of Seleucus I Nicator produced in Babylon between 311-305 BC (estimate: £300-500 plus buyer’s premium). The Collection also includes a quantity of early 20th century banknotes from the period of British direct rule in India, and a reference library of over one hundred volumes including scarce and out-of-print works. Of particular note is the first edition of David Sellwood’s An Introduction to the Coinage of Parthia, published by Spink & Son in London, 1971 (estimate: £70-100).
