A Fine and Extremely Rare Burr Elm and Walnut Three Month Duration Longcase Clock, signed...

A Fine and Extremely Rare Burr Elm and Walnut Three Month Duration Longcase Clock, signed Morgan Lowry in Leeds, circa 1715, the attractive and nicely figured case with a later built caddied top and pierced fretwork panels, glazed movement viewing windows to the sides, gilt wooden capitals with three-quarter columns flanking the hood door, case with burr elm panels and walnut crossbanding veneers on a oak carcass, moulded edged trunk door with glazed lenticle, rectangular plinth raised upon a later built double skirting, 13-inch square brass dial with silvered Roman numeral chapter ring signed 'Morgan Lowry in Leeds', finely matted dial centre with subsidiary seconds and engraved above on a silvered plaque depicting cherubs, dial with herringbone engraving around the perimeter, finely pierced hands, the large six pillar movement with a anchor escapement and outside countwheel striking on a bell, possibly later seatboard, 260cm high

Morgan Lowry (Leeds, 1682-1757) was the son of Jeremy Lowry. He is recorded as a maker of repute, and was working in London c.1700 where he picked up his skills for producing quality movements, including long duration longcase clocks. In 1703 he married Ann Boyes in Leeds and they had a daughter named Anne in 1715. His wife died in 1726 and in 1737 he married Mary Thwaites. He worked in Briggate and in Boar Lane in Leeds. He was a Sergeant at Mace for the Borough of Leeds until 1755. His clocks are extremely rare. There is a walnut long duration clock and a year going longcase clock by him in the Leeds City Museum.

04.11.10, Case with good figuring to the wood throughout, hood with later built caddy, pierced frets have been replaced at some time but along time ago, behind the right hand side hood column and witness marks for the original hinges for the hood door used to be, left hand side front column with some small wood worm holes (non active), both sides of the cheeks have been cut back slightly and small pieces od wood added to both sides, backboard of the case you can see where the cheek would have gone back to oringinally before being slightly cut back at both sides, cheeks have had repair in the past and in my opinion the dial and movement is original to the case, side cheeks have some small wood worm holes which are (non active), seatboard possibly replaced, trunk with shrinkage cracks in places and the surface of the case throughout has been polished at some time, trunk door slightly bowed to the top and bottom, top of the backboard has been repaired with a piece of spliced wood, hinges and the lock replaced, plinth with a crack to the front which has been filled and repaired at some time, stepped skirting is later, dial with silvered chapter ring slightly discoloured, dial with vacant ringed hole situated behind silvered seconds dial plaque, this ringed hole is exactly the same ringed hole as the one that the seconds hand comes through now, maybe the maker originally ment to place the seconds hand just slightly higher on the dial and had second thoughts, movement appears that the escape wheel arbor and escape wheel have been replaced at a later date, possibly the original escape wheel was bigger in size than it is now due to the vacant hole to the movement front plate just above the escape wheel pivot hole now, movement looks clean.
