According to the label on the reverse, the sitter succeeded to the title and adopted the name Lord D'arcy of Navan on the death of his maternal grandfather. The D'arcy family were prominent breeders of the early English thoroughbred and came from Sedbury near Richmond.

In restored condition. Relined, cleaned and revarnished. The varnish has now slightly deteriorated and has a somewhat opaque quality in areas, more notably around the craquelure of the background. Craquluere throughout of varying sizes although stable. More evident within slightly thicker areas of paint. The paint is thin in places, notably at the young gentleman's left shoulder, parts of the blue velvet attire in general, some of his hair etc... The surface of the painting is slightly flattened as a result of the restoration process. Surface dirt and discoloured varnish. Areas of retouching mostly to background which has deteriorated and is evident by eye and less apparent under a UV light. Further areas of retouching and strengthening again mostly evident by eye within his right sleeve. Odd tiny white fleck to surface Otherwise in a broadly stable and presentable state of preservation.
