2 x Roman Provincial - Mesopotamia comprising: (1) Septimius Severus (AD 193-211) AE 24 (24mm, 8.26g), Carrhae mint, obv. laureate head right, rev. tetrastyle temple containing a conical baetyl surmounted with a crescent, two standards surmounted by crescents in the wings, (BMC 4 var., pl. XII 4; Lindgren & Kovacs 2557 var.), scratches to obv. right field, otherwise dark patina, VF VERY RARE; and (2) Elagabalus (AD 218-22) AE 27 (27mm, 13.02g), Edessa mint, obv. laureate, draped and cuirassed bust left, rev. Tyche seated on rock left, river god Orontes swimming left (SNG Cop. 208; BMC 56), AVF; together with 9 x mixed AE

An interesting and eclectic mix of coins spanning over 1000 years of history will go under the hammer in Tennants Auctioneers’ Coins & Banknotes Sale on 15th February. Amongst the nearly 600 lots are rare and fine examples such as a Gold Proof Set issued in 1937 to mark the Coronation of George VI, an AE Drachm produced in Alexandria mint in the reign of the Ptolemy III Euergetes (246-221 BC), a Portuguese Joao V (1720-56) 4 Escudos (Peca) minted in Lisbon in 1727 and two consecutively numbered Bank of England white five pounds.
