Brian Shields was born in Liverpool in 1951. The unusual nickname of 'braaq' is a misspelling of the famous French artist Braque which was adopted on account of his artistic talent as a boy, which he later put to use as his signature on his work. The name 'Ann' is also included after his own signature in reference to his sister who died age 21, and whose memory all of his subsequent paintings were dedicated.
Shields' paintings focus on the industrial landscape of Liverpool, based often in a humorous way on his childhood memories of the city, in which he frequently painted himself into the scenes as a boy wearing a striped jumper.
