Hartley (Marie) The Yorkshire Dales, 1989, Smith Settle, Otley, 4to, wood engravings of views and scenes observed in Swaledale, Wensleydale and Wharfdale; original full purple goatskin, top edge gilt, presented in publisher's solander box and signed by artist and publisher to limitation leaf at rear, with a set of duplicate impressions contained in a separate cloth-backed portfolio. From a limited de luxe edition of 10 copies, one of four 'out of series' copies (from a total edition of 268). A handsome production printed on a hand press, in mint condition. Yorkshire artist Hartley studied at Leeds College of Art, taught by Owen Jennings. She won a place at the Slade School of Art in London in 1921, where she specialized in wood engraving and developed her unintrusive but exact style of observation of the Yorkshire dales and its people (1).
