A Second World War Japanese Field Grade Officer's Shin Gunto Type 98 Katana, the 62.5cm steel blade with undulating hamon, unsigned tang with two mekugi ana, one piece silvered metal habaki, the brown braid bound same tsuka with triple prunus head menuki, prunus decorated browned fuchi and kashira, with red and brown braid tassel, sprung clip, browned tsuba pierced and cast with prunus blossom, with gilt seppa and olive green steel saya with browned prunus decorated mounts, 96cm

Footnote :- Surrendered to Captain Whyrll Crompton (a relative of the vendor) at the end of the Second World War

Tip of blade is chipped, with some black pitting and delamination marks. Habaki does not fit very well. The saya with paint flakes revealing the red base.
