Mixed English & Foreign Silver, to include: UK: William III sixpence 1697 obv. third draped bust right, rev. crowned cruciform shields, plain angles (GFine); 2 x Anne shillings 1711 obv. drape bust left, rev. as before, one with deliberate scratches in angles, (VG); 3 x George II comprising: 2 x shillings 1741 rev. roses in angles, and 1745 LIMA rev. plain angles, the latter previously gilded (Fair to VG); and sixpence 1757 rev. roses and plumes in angles (VF+) 2 x George III: shilling 1816 (VG); and Maundy 3d 1763 (VF); 3 x Victoria: double florin 1882, Roman I in date (near Fine); florin 1889 (Fair); and Maundy 2d 1838 (GVF); and pre-1947 silver halfcrowns, florins, groats and threepences, gross weight 132.3g; 4 x Belgium: 1 franc 1844 (about Fine), and 3 x 50 cents 1898, 1901 and 1910 (Poor to VG); Canada 5 cents 1912 (VG); Essequibo & Demerary 1/8 guilder 1835/3, the 5 over a 3, (VG); 2 x France 5 francs 1831B, Rouen mint (VG), and 1 franc 1866 (VG); Germany 1 mark 1924A (GFine); Greece 5 drachmai 1876A (VG to near Fine); Ireland halfcrown 1928 (Fine); 2 x Italy 1 lira 1863 and 1884 (Good to VG); South African Republic 2 shillings 1897 (Fine); Switzerland ½ franc 1946 (GVF); and 2 x USA half dollar 1964 (AUNC), and dime 1899 (AVF); together with a Coronation of King Edward VII 1902, Silver Medal (31mm, 12.74g), obv. crowned bust of the King right, rev. crowned bust of the Queen right (Fine)

Auction: Coins & Banknotes, 15th Feb, 2023

An interesting and eclectic mix of coins spanning over 1000 years of history will go under the hammer in Tennants Auctioneers’ Coins & Banknotes Sale on 15th February. Amongst the nearly 600 lots are rare and fine examples such as a Gold Proof Set issued in 1937 to mark the Coronation of George VI, an AE Drachm produced in Alexandria mint in the reign of the Ptolemy III Euergetes (246-221 BC), a Portuguese Joao V (1720-56) 4 Escudos (Peca) minted in Lisbon in 1727 and two consecutively numbered Bank of England white five pounds.
