Twentieth-century authors. Collection of signed letters to autograph collector and hotelier Eileen Cond (1911-1984) from various authors, comprising:
1. J. Jefferson Farjeon (1883-1955). 20 letters (14 autograph, 6 typed), c.1935-53 (many undated), enclosing signed copies of his books, and discussing the progress of his novels, his other activities including wartime commissions ('I am now working on a B.B.C. series for the Forces'), and personal matters including the death of his wife ('I have lost the loveliest companion a man could ever have. These things have to happen ... but I confess life now seems completely meaningless'),
2. H. Taprell Dorling DSO RN (1883-1968), known as 'Taffrail'. 35 autograph letters, all signed with his nom-de-plume 'Taffrail', 1950-62, many running to several pages, a warm and voluminous correspondence discussing Dorling's writings, his duties in the Port Minewatching Service, social engagements, etc.,
3. Elleston Trevor (1920-1995). 10 letters (most of them typed), c.1950-70, together with 9 mainly typed letters from his wife and agent Jonquil Trevor (1917-1986), providing updates on Elleston's books, returning signed copies, etc.,
4. Victor Canning (1911-1986). 23 letters (mainly autograph), c.1950-70, similar content to the preceding (qty: 97)
Jefferson Farjeon was a prolific crime and mystery writer. Dorling was naval officer and author of naval adventure stories and reference works including Ribbons and Medals (1915); from his correspondence it appears that he made several visits to Cond's Deer Park Hotel in Honiton. Elleston Trevor was the author of The Flight of the Phoenix (1964), memorably filmed. His letters to Eileen have a rather laboured flippancy; his wife's are much kinder. Victor Canning was the author of The Rainbird Pattern (1972), the basis for The Family Plot (1976), the final film directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
