~ Attributed to Henry Thompson RA (1773-1843)
Portrait of a lady seated in the guise of Hebe with attendant Eagle and holding a jug
With Christie's stencil 546JH to stretcher, oil on canvas, 126.5cm by 100cm
Sold for £1,600
Estimated at £1,200 - £1,800
Reline of some age, cleaned and revarnished. The surface is slighly flattened from the restoration process and the paint is thin in places. Some minor rubbing/abrasions to edges. Two white coloured slightly diagonal surface scuffs/scratches approx. centre from lower edge ending roughly 20cm away from lower edge (see images). Odd other further superficial surface scratch. Covered in a layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. The varnish has also deteriorated and has taken on a chalky quality mostly in and around the dark green areas of the lower background and is enhancing the fine stable craquelure. Other areas of more isolated and varying sized craquelure elsewhere especially within the areas of flesh of the figure. There is little to discern in the way of overpainting or retouching under a UV light excluding some isolated areas of infilling to old widely spaced craquelure and the odd very small retouch elsewhere. Otherwise in a reasonably good and stable state of preservation.
