Born in 1940, educated at Mary Erskine School for girls Edinburgh, Russell studied at the Edinburgh College of Art from 1858-63, after which she became a lecturer in drawing and painting at Edinburgh College of Art. Russell exhibited at a number of galleries including Gallery Paton, Edinburgh, Woodlands Gallery, Greenwich, King's College, London, The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh among others.
