John Scott (Lots 2157-2162)

John Scott, known as The Wizard of the North, was born in Chippenham to a father who was jockey and later trainer. It was perhaps inevitable that John would follow in his footsteps. His career as a jockey was short lived as he gained too much weight. By 1814 he was working in Middleham with James Croft and later for Edward Petre at Stapleton Park near Darrington. By 1825 he had bought the Whitewall Stables in Malton, with room to stable 100 horses, where he stayed for the rest of his life. He was to have a successful career with an early win at St Leger in 1822, the first of 16 wins there. Overall he was responsible for wins in 40 British Classic races, a record which stood until 2021. Scott died in October 1871 at Whitewall, having married twice and had three children.

Sold for £250
Estimated at £100 - £150

Fully marked inside base and further part marked inside cover. The marks are generally clear. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as a softening to the engraving and engine-turned decoration. There are some scuffs and marks to the leather case. There is a small ding to the back edge of the base.
