The inscription reads '3rd Prize This Cup was Presented by Mess'rs Blizard & Co. Maltsters, Tewkesbury to Jno Read Esq'r Defford for procuding the 3rd Best 200 Bushels of Barley the Growth of 1861 21st 1862'.

Marked underneath with crowned harp, Hibernia, date letter and maker's mark. The marks are generally clear. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The engraving is later.
