An American Silver and Enamel Vesta-Case
Attributed to Gorham, Providence, Rhode Island, Circa 1891

modelled as an envelope, the front enamelled with a red George Washington stamp, with cancellation mark for Philadelphia dated December 1891, further engraved 'Sam'l Lee Rymer Esq, J.P., Pevensey, Croydon, Surrey', to simulate an address, the back enamelled with a post office receipt mark dated 12.25.91, the inside of the cover with striker

55mm, gross weight 14dwt, 22gr

Samuel Lee Rymer (1832-1909) was originally from Pymouth. He trained to be a dentist and set up a practice in the middle of the 19th century on George Street, Croydon. Besides being active in the dental profession, he also sat on the Croydon board of health, was a councillor and later mayor of Croydon, and was a Justice of the Peace, as noted on the present vesta-case.

Stamped inside the cover 'Sterling' and 'Pat June 24 1890'. There are some overall surface scratches and wear, consistent with age and use. There is a shallow bruise on the cover.
