Christie's, 12 June 2002, lot 57.
From a Private Collection of Silver (lots 2140-2230).

These unusual plates were created by Paul Storr for Charles Anderson Pelham to add to an extensive service which he had originally commissioned, presumably to celebrate his marriage to Sophie, the daughter of George Aufrere, in 1770. The original service was probably designed, at least in part, by William Chambers and produced by the silversmiths John Parker and Edward Wakelin and others. The service is recorded in the Workman’s and Gentleman’s Ledgers which were kept by Parker and Wakelin and are now preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum and included two pairs of large tureens, two pairs of small tureens, ice-pails and comports. One of the tureens was sold by Sotheby’s, 4 June 2008, lot 237.

Pelham was born in Broughton, Lincolnshire, the son of Francis Anderson and his wife Eleanor. He was to go on to inherit the estates of his great uncle Charles Pelham (d.1763) of Brocklesby, Lincolnshire and was to take the additional surname Pelham at that time. Pelham was elected to the House of Commons for Beverley in 1768 and remained Member of Parliament there until 1774 before representing Lincolnshire until 1794. He was raised to the peerage as Baron Yarborough and variously served as High Sheriff of Lincolnshire and was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society. On his death at Brocklesby Hall in 1823 he was succeeded by his son Charles who was to go on to be made Earl of Yarborough in 1837.

Sold for £12,500
Estimated at £10,000 - £15,000
