A Circa 1880's Telescopic Japanese Ivory Fan, with black decoration on an ivory ojime bead and large lilac silk tassels hanging from cord, the double paper leaf delicately painted with a cockerel and hen, the male in bright detail, with butterflies and a dragonfly amidst convolvulus flowers and foliage. The verso, in strong gold, depicts four Japanese figures going about their daily life. The guards are painted with a vine and birds in various shades of takamaki-e, the toggle is also decorated. Guard length when closed 19.5cm, when extended, 22.5cm

The telescopic action operates quite stiffly but works well. Recto/ verso, the leaf has tiny nicks to the lower edge and at one point the paper is lifting.
