British School (19th Century)
Portrait of a gentleman, head and shoulders, possibly a self portrait, wearing a red cap and standing before a landscape in a feigned oval
Oil on canvas, 66cm by 63cm (unframed)
Sold for £350
Estimated at £150 - £250
Unframed. Original canvas. Covered in a thick layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. Several areas of paint loss (see images). Medium to widely spaced craquelure throughout, areas of which look precarious and will require prompt intervention. Rubbing, abrasions and damage to edges of the canvas, most notably to the right edge. Areas of bitumen in the paint have split (see images). Visible stretcher shadow. Under UV there has evidently been a course of retouching and infilling to old craquelure throughout the face and hat, and less so in other areas. Please see further images as this picture is in fairly precarious state. For further information please contact the department.
