Pasquale Romanelli (Italian 1812-1897): Paolo e Francesca from Dante's Divine Comedy, a white Carrara marble figure group, signed P. Romanelli, Firenze 1875, 116cm high

Provenance: Formerly in the grounds of a manor house in Bathampton, Bath, Wiltshire.

Pasquale Romanelli was the first in an impressive family line of artists and sculptors. He trained at the Accademia delle Belle Arti di Firenze and worked with Lorenzo Bartolini, acquiring his mentor's studio on his death which continues in the family today as Studio Romanelli, a unique working artist studio in Florence. The Romanelli studio has a smaller version of Paolo e Francesca in their archive collection. Pasquale Romanelli exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1851 and is renowned for his public monuments in Italy. His works can be found in numerous museums worldwide, including Ruth e la Delusa in the Hermitage, St. Petersburg, The Smithsonian, The Crocker Art Museum, California and the Museo Poldi Pezzoli, Milan.

Some weathering and deterioration to the surface throughout through exposure to the outside, and with a bloom of growth covering the surface. She with both little fingers missing. Some deep scratches and chipping through the surface green colour to the white below. 270213
