Leith, a beggar's badge, of circular form, cast with the Holy Family in a sailing ship over 1563, the border inscribed PERSEVERANCE, the reverse LEITH POOR NR10, 6cm diameter Beggar's badges were introduced in Scotland by an Act of Parliament in 1424, which made begging illegal except by those wearing an official badge. The badges were issued by the parish authorities leading to varied designs, often including the name of the parish.
