A 19^th Century Mexican Powder Horn, of light semi-translucent polished cow horn, with scrimshaw decoration of a ribbon inscribed HINDEPENCIA over a Mexican eagle with a snake in its beak and perched on a globe, with a native Mexican shooting a bow and arrow up towards it, two lions to the side, one seated on a strong box, with a peacock perched amidst flowering branches, with wood end plate and two brass suspension rings, lacks stopper, 31cm; a 19^th Century Water Canteen, fashioned from a gourd of compressed globular form, with a walnut dished circular mouthpiece and two brass lion mask and ring suspenders, the body with scrimshaw decoration of an armorial of a Mexican type eagle below and crown and within a shield, all within a garland tied by a ribbon inscribed NICEA CIVITAS, the opposing side with a trophy of bow, quivers and arrows over T. D’AMOUR, the neck set with a paper label ‘Collection C S Gilbert’, 19cm (2)

Footnote:- Formally the property of the Gilberts Family of Manchester. The Gilberts were pawn brokers in the Salford Docks area after the opening of the Manchester Ship Canal. Three generations of the family collected powder horns and flasks, and often exhibited them
