A 19th Century South African Powder Horn, of striated polished cow horn, with scrimshaw decoration depicting the Battle of Blood River, showing Zulu warriors with assegais and shields attacking a covered ox cart defended by Boer trackers, with the standing figures of King Dingaan and Andries Pretoria, with stepped nozzle and later wood end plate, the neck set with two paper labels, one printed ‘Exhibited Houldsworth Hall Manchester May 20th 1953’, the other Exhibited Granada Television June 22nd 1960’, 30cm
Footnote:- Formally the property of the Gilberts Family of Manchester. The Gilberts were pawn brokers in the Salford Docks area after the opening of the Manchester Ship Canal. Three generations of the family collected powder horns and flasks, and often exhibited them
