A Maori Whalebone Patu Paraoa, of flattened paddle form, the ribbed handle pierced for a thong, 19th century, 39 cm long, 13 cm wide
Provenance: The vendor's Great Grandfather was a fruit, vegetable and poultry dealer in Shipley, West Yorkshire. When he closed the business in the 1920s he opened a curio shop and this was one of the items purchased for stock. At that time there were many wool merchants in the Shipley area who would inevitably have had contacts in New Zealand.
