A Pretty Mid-18th Century Cabriolet Fan, the slender monture plain ivory, the gorge and mid-leaf panel shaped to show the carving when closed. The upper band of the double paper leaf is painted with a lady out for a drive in her horse-drawn cabriolet carriage (the cabriolet, a one-horse carriage, being in use from 1755). To the left, a lady in gold highlighted robe carries an elaborate parasol, and gazes across to the right where her beau, in fine 18th century long waistcoat, coat and breeches, returns her gaze, his sword at his side. The lower, narrower band, is painted with flowers, a river bank and a grand house with towers. The verso is painted in pastels with simple rural scenes. Guard length 10.5 inches or 26.5cm. . Good for age. Several leaf folds are slightly torn at the top with a small section of paper lacking at the centre. To the left, the leaf has one fold split in the middle and a crude repair has been effected from behind.
