William Bowness (1809-1867) A three quarter length portrait of William Rymer wearing a black tail coat, green waistcoat, hat and gloves, signed, extensively inscribed and dated 1855 verso, oil on canvas, 110.5cm by 84cm

William Rymer was born in 1823, married Mary Harrison 1849 at Kendal and died 1865 aged 42 years. He lived at Cheetham Hill, Manchester. He was descended from Robert Rymer, son of Oliver Rymer Baptized August 3rd 1657 at Walton near Preston, Lancs.

Patch to reverse of canvas approx 10 by 6cm with associated retouching to front. Light stretcher shadow. Original canvas. Fine-medium sized craquelure across the surface (essentially stable), some light surface dirt and discoloured varnish, and small flaking with the retouching to hair on left hand side. A few very minor loses. Not examined with a UV light
