A Good Chinese Mandarin Fan, circa 1860's, contained in a black lacquer fan box, the lid exterior painted in gold with stylised trees, two figures at leisure, and butterflies. The interior of the lid is delicately painted blue on paper, featuring a bird, pink glowers and fruits, and the base is fitted with pink card. The fan, with wood monture lacquered in black and several shades of gold, featuring a terrace scene with several people, insects and flowers, has a double paper leaf with differing scenes recto/verso. To one side, an outside gathering in various groups, the figures with applied painted ivory faces and applied silk for their robes. To the verso, three different waterside scenes, strong blues and greens for the central cartouche, much paler colours used for the two side vignettes, all featuring people wearing detailed robes in different colours. The reserves, in pale pink and green, feature different fruits, fish and birds. A small metal loop is fitted with a silk tassel in cream and maroon. Guard length 10.25 inches or 26cm
. the fan is in good clean order with slight rubbing to the folds but generally a strong leaf that has not required repair. The box has one or two small chips to the exterior but again is in good condition for age. The clasp closes firmly.
