Workshop of Robert Mouseman Thompson (Kilburn): An English Oak Chest of Drawers, two plank adzed top, above three banks of four drawers, each with wrought iron hoop handles, cross head screws, panelled ends, with recessed carved mouse trademark, 214cm wide, 62cm deep, 93cm high
Waddington's Shop, Worksop, Notts, 1958.
Sold for £5,000
Estimated at £3,000 - £5,000
The top with some fading and splash marks. One noticeable fairly deep scratch to the front left-hand side (approximately 6cm long). Numerous other light surface scratches and paint splatters. Two or three minor fingernail-sized dents. The left-hand side has a replacement panel pinned to it - possibly done in construction (please see additional image and image of right-hand side for comparison). The front-left stile has an old chip to the bottom, which has now weathered into the character of the chest and does not detract from its value in our opinion. Otherwise a good sizeable chest.
Auction: 20th Century Design, 4th Mar, 2023
A rare stained glass window of St Margaret of Antioch by Pre-Raphaelite and Arts and Crafts luminary Sir Edward Burne-Jones leads the Spring 20th Century Design Sale with an estimate of £15,000-20,000 plus buyer’s premium. A further gem of the Arts and Crafts era on offer in the sale is a Silver and Enamel Cigarette Box by Omar Ramsden and Alwyn Carr (estimate: £4,000-6,000). Omar Ramsden was one of the most acclaimed and successful silversmiths of the early 20th century and a key influence on both silversmithing and the Arts and Crafts movement.
The sale will also offer a bumper selection of fine and early pieces by Yorkshire Arts and Crafts furniture maker Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson from three good private collections; Marco-Pierre White's Rudloe Arms Hotel, Denton Hall near Ilkley and the Tanfield Collection. Also on offer in the sale is an unusual and playful Private Collection of Automata dating from 1970 to 2000.
Please note condition report requests for furniture will be provided once items are out of storage.
