Peter Barker-Mill (1908-1994)
"Haute Ecole"
Signed in pencil, inscribed and numbered 6/45, a linocut print

The lot is sold with a copy of Claude Flight's booklet on lino cutting & printing, Batsford 1934, where a print by the artist is illustrated on page 3.

Peter Barker- Mill attended the avant garde Grosvenor School of Modern Art in London during the early 1930's and became a protégé of Claude Flight. Following this, he attended the Academie Andre Lhote in Paris. He showed paintings and prints at The London Group, The New English Art Club and several London Galleries. His work also attracted the attention of Christopher Sandford who ran the Golden Cockerel Press and who became pivotal in commissioning Barker- Mill to produce wood engravings for the Golden Cockerel Press books, and many illustrations for the Kelmscott Press.

In 1965 Barker -Mill became the first chairman of the Arnolfini Gallery in Bristol. He was a great philanthropist and overall patron of the contemporary arts. In 1989 the Arnolfini showed a retrospective of his work.

The Manchester City Art Gallery purchased a copy of "Haute Ecole" in 1937, which now forms part of the permanent collection.
