NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE* within wreath of York roses, minor rim imperfections and wear to the obv. lions passant guardant, otherwise AEF.
*William Armstrong, 1st Baron Armstrong FRS was a Victorian engineer, philanthropist and early advocate for renewable energy; his own home at Cragside in Rothbury, Northumberland was the first residence anywhere in the world to be lit with hydroelectric power. This medal was awarded to Armstrong & Co at the first Yorkshire Fine art and Industrial Exhibition which took place between July and October 1886 on the grounds of Bootham Asylum, York. The Exhibition's official catalogue records Armstrong's entry as 'Two Pieces of mounted Field Ordnance'.
