The Topham Chase has been run at Aintree since 1949, one of only three races run over the Grand National fences. As a keen benefactor of the arts Mirabel Topham introduced the annual competition to design the trophy for that year's race, the winning entry being presented at the April meeting at Aintree. The 1968 race was won by Surcharge, owned by Mrs L. Jackson, trained by J. Barclay and ridden by S.Davenport.

A repair to the join between the pyramid base and cube top, visible evidence of this at the join. The vacant panel to the front of base on right is engraved but has been turned around showing the vacant side.
