Figures at rest beside a lochside mill
Indistinctly signed and dated?, oil on canvas, 83.5cm by 122.5cm
Sold for £550
Estimated at £300 - £500
In fully restored condition. Stiffly relined, cleaned and revarnished. The surface is somewhat flattened, and the paint is thin in places as a result of the restoration process, and the process and intervention is broadly rather apparent. Some surface dirt and discoloured varnish now in evidence. General retouching to outer edges which is mostly visible by eye. Fairly significant amount of strengthening, retouching and finer detailing to lower right-hand corner and up into the landscape and canopy of the trees. A similar extent of restoration, retouching and redrawing of details throughout the foreground in general. The receding landscape and sky seemingly to have received a lesser extent of restoration, although some areas of the general definition of craquelure and outline of the grassy hill in particular on the right-hand side has received some intervention, in addition to particularly the rocky and stony elements of receding landscape centre, etc. Varying sized areas of craquelure throughout, more significantly spaced particularly in the upper left-hand area, which is lifting and showing a character of precariousness in parts. Further small losses within the vicinity. Degree of lifting paint upper left-hand corner in and around old restoration. Other minor chips and losses to surface, sky. minor rubbing and abrasion to edges in general.
