A Rare and Unusual Chinese Circular Face Screen, Qing Dynasty, pien-mien, with carved ivory handle that runs the length of the verso, the recto featuring adults and children having applied painted ivory faces and silk robes, the verso divided into quarters, two of which are filled with applied peacock feathers the remainder with fine and colourful kingfisher wing, on a dark brown velvet background, the fan bound with patterned silk braid. Overall height 40cm, width 27.5cm, height of handle 40cm

Very similar to an example featured on Page 52 of "The History of Fans" by G Woolliscroft Rhead published in 1910. See also page 33 of "F„cher", Marie-Louise and Gnter Barish, for another example with kingfisher wing, thought to be 18th century

. some slight damage evident at the very edges and to the centre of the recto following the line of the handle behind, the peacock feather possibly concealing more. The braid edging is slightly worn. Some loss to the kingfisher wing. Peacock feathers slightly worn. Some loss to the ivory handle at the top.
