An Extravagant 18th Century Embroidered Shaped Collar, the background of pale cream gauze,...

An Extravagant 18th Century Embroidered Shaped Collar, the background of pale cream gauze, formed of two panels that come to a central point, both ends of the fabric with selvedges, indicating no previous use. Two meandering lines of intricate gold embroidery run the length of the collar, with colourful flowers and leaves embroidered between and above them. From the back it can be noted that in fact all these are couched onto the plain fabric. The exterior measures approximately 47 inches. Together with A Panel of Emerald Green Silk which has perhaps been used as an apron. All edges are applied with a narrow metal thread braid, and two corners and the very centre are applied with floral motifs worked in metal threads and coloured silks. At the bottom, a paper label bears a handwritten word, in ink, "Saltoun". This could indicate that it came from the Scottish estate of Hugh de Moreville, and Saltoun Hall is a historic House in East Lothian. Another note stated "Indian Embroidery, date unknown, a half handkerchief of ????, ????embroidered". Below the label, a 3.5 inch or 9cm brown silk panel is appliquéd with the same metal thread and silk flowers. Overall size 18.25 inches or 46cm by 19.75 inches or 50cm (2)

Sold for £190
Estimated at £200 - £500

. The collar gauze has several torn areas mainly near the centre. The silk embroidery has wear to the brown silk under the border panel and some fade to the green silk along a fold line.
