Born in Midlothian, MacTaggart was grandson of the leading Scottish landscape artist William McTaggart (1835-1910). Having studied at Edinburgh College of Art from 1918 to 1921, he later returned to the capital to teach between 1933 to 1959, before becoming President of the Royal Scottish Academy for five years. The artist drew inspiration from French artists such as Georges Rouault as well as the works of Edvard Munch, as well as being interested in the use of colour as a way of conveying emotion, using this passion to expressively depicted both landscapes and still lifes.
