Circle of John Frederick Herring Senior (1795-1865)
A portrait of the horse Hillaire standing in a stable
Signed and inscribed, oil on canvas, 68cm by 89cm
Sold for £900
Estimated at £500 - £800
In fully restored condition. Stiffly relined, cleaned and revarnished. The reline or glueing down of the original surface to later canvas is especially evident along top edge. Covered in a fairly thick layer of dirt and discoloured varnish which has deteriorated and has an opaque quality in parts. The surface is flattened and the paint is thin in places as a result of the restoration process. Both the inscription and the "artist" signature has either been added or significantly strengthened at a later date. Likely old tear with associated retouching approx. centre within the dark upper shadow, which is approx. the full width of this shadowy area. Further smaller more scattered retouching in a somewhat more concentrated fashion to the left of this, and further to the right of this, each by approx. 4cm. Some of the darker tones and definition to define the musculature of the animal, particularly the shoulder and general outline, in addition to a good degree of the dark paint possibly later or strengthened. The shadowy area and background in general also possibly fairly consistently strengthened, as is the outlining and linear detailing of the feeding trough, etc. Some of the more notable retouching or damages visible by eye. Some general rubbing and abrasion to the outer edges. For more information please contact the department.
